چکیده

Mutual information is fundamentally important for measuring statistical dependence between variables and for quantifying information transfer by signaling and communication mechanisms. It can, however, be challenging to evaluate for physical models of such mechanisms and to estimate reliably from data. Furthermore, its relationship to better known statistical procedures is still poorly understood. Here we explore new connections between mutual information and regression-based dependence measures, ν−1, that utilise the determinant of the second-moment matrix of the conditional mean prediction error. We examine convergence properties as ν → 0 and establish sharp lower bounds on mutual information and capacity of the form log(ν−1/2). The bounds are tighter than lower bounds based on the Pearson correlation and ones derived using average mean square-error rate distortion arguments. Furthermore, their estimation is feasible using techniques from nonparametric regression. As an illustration we provide bootstrap confidence intervals for the lower bounds which, through use of a composite estimator, substantially improve upon inference about mutual information based on k-nearest neighbour estimators alone.

Bayesian Testing of a Point Null Hypothesis Based on the Latent Information Prior

Bayesian testing of a point null hypothesis is considered. The null hypothesis is that an observation, x, is distributed according to the normal distribution with a mean of zero and known variance σ. The alternative hypothesis is that x is distributed according to a normal distribution with an unknown nonzero mean, μ, and variance σ. The testing problem is formulated as a prediction problem. Ba...

Feature Selection in Regression Tasks Using Conditional Mutual Information

This paper presents a supervised feature selection method applied to regression problems. The selection method uses a Dissimilarity matrix originally developed for classification problems, whose applicability is extended here to regression and built using the conditional mutual information between features with respect to a continuous relevant variable that represents the regression function. A...

Multiple Access Gaussian Channels with Arbitrary Inputs: Optimal Precoding and Power Allocation

In this paper, we derive new closed-form expressions for the gradient of the mutual information with respect to arbitrary parameters of the two-user multiple access channel (MAC). The derived relations generalize the fundamental relation between the derivative of the mutual information and the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) to multiuser setups. We prove that the derivative of the mutual info...

STATISTICAL PREDICTION OF THE SEQUENCE OF LARGE EARTHQUAKES IN IRAN

The use of different probability distributions as described by the Exponential, Pareto, Lognormal, Rayleigh, and Gama probability functions applied to estimation the time of the next great earthquake (Ms≥6.0) in different seismotectonic provinces of Iran. This prediction is based on the information about past earthquake occurrences in the given region and the basic assumption that future seismi...

Mutual information and gamma test for input selection

In this paper, input selection is performed using two different approaches. The first approach is based on the Gamma test. This test estimates the mean square error (MSE) that can be achieved without overfitting. The best set of inputs is the one that minimises the result of the Gamma test. The second method estimates the Mutual Information between a set of inputs and the output. The best set o...
